Motion Picture / TV Filming Policy

In 2018, the Garfield Heights Neighborhood Association (GHNA) adopted the policy that a daily donation (or one time donation) should be paid to the GHNA in exchange for sanctioning a film, tv or commercial production within the boundaries of the GHNA.

GHNA is bounded by Washington Boulevard (south side of street) to the north, Mountain Street (north side of the street) to the south, Los Robles Avenue (west side of the street) to the east, and Marengo Avenue (both sides) to the west.  The donation shall be paid directly to GHNA and shall be in addition to and irrespective of any fees paid to the property owner(s) involved.

It shall be the responsibility of the property owner(s) to make sure that the film and/or production companies involved in the project contact the GHNA prior to the start date of the project about this donation, and that the film/production company has the proper permits from the City of Pasadena's Film Office.

According to the City’ of Pasadena's web site, all productions including student film projects must have the proper permits and security:

Elizabethtown  - 2005, Dir. Cameron Crowe

In 2004, a 2-story, 1912 craftsman residence at 1185 N. Marengo Ave. designed by architect Sylvanus Marsten was transformed into a Kentucky homestead belonging to the character Aunt Dora in this Cameron Crowe-directed feature film. Elizabethtown starred Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin, and Paula Dean as "Aunt Dora." IMDB link

The homeowners moved into a long-term hotel for three months while the interior and backyard of the house was prepped by Paramount Studios for a week of shooting. Nearly every room of the home was decorated with vintage furniture and props.
In preparation for the film, the Paramount art department worked with the homeowners to restore the 1970s style kitchen into a vintage 1912 craftsman kitchen with white subway tiles, plaster-covered oven vent, built-in cabinets with glass doors matching the original pantry cabinets, double-hung windows, and a breakfast nook. The crew also hung rooster-themed wallpaper and painted the cabinets teal green, but both were (thankfully) removed after the shooting wrapped. Several nearby front yards on Marengo were rented for catering and costumes during the summer-time shooting.
